Working as a wedding and funeral celebrant: running both from one diary

By Samuel Stevens, founder ·

Plenty of UK celebrants do both weddings and funerals, and the two halves of the work could hardly feel more different. One is months of joyful build-up; the other arrives in a matter of days and asks everything of you emotionally. Doing both is a privilege — but it does mean your diary has to hold two completely different rhythms at once.

Get the system right and that's a strength: steady work across the year, and a practice that isn't at the mercy of one season. Get it wrong and you're forever switching between two sets of tools, two spreadsheets and two trains of thought.

Two jobs, two rhythms

The clearest difference is time:

  • Weddings are often booked twelve to eighteen months ahead. The work is a long series of touchpoints — the first enquiry, the meeting, the script drafts, the final details call — spread across a year.
  • Funerals come together in days. There's no long runway, the details matter enormously, and there's rarely a second chance to get a name or a date right.

A diary that suits one doesn't automatically suit the other. Weddings need you to nurture a booking patiently over many months; funerals need you to capture everything instantly and move fast.

Where doing both gets messy

The friction usually shows up in the gaps:

  1. Two systems, double the admin. A wedding tool here, a funeral spreadsheet there, and the same details typed in twice.
  2. Context-switching. Heads-down on a hard funeral week, it's easy to let a wedding follow-up slip — the enquiry you didn't reply to, the details call you meant to book.
  3. No single view of your week. When your bookings live in different places, you never quite see the whole picture at a glance.

One system, both workflows

The fix is to stop running two practices and start running one, with a tool that understands both kinds of ceremony. Ceranova is the only UK CRM built for both wedding and funeral celebrants in one place — each booking carries the right details for its type, while your calendar, your clients and your invoices all live in a single view. You can see how it fits together on the celebrant CRM for weddings and funerals page.

What you get back

When both sides of the work share one calm home, the double-entry disappears, nothing slips through the gap between weddings and funerals, and your attention is free for the part only you can do — being fully present for the family in front of you, whatever the occasion.
